Lucent Takamiya suits families who want a large onsen hotel facing the Zao Chuo Ropeway at a modest price, and the trade-off is the scale of a 60-room house after the small inns up the street.

By the hotel's own count the Zao Chuo Ropeway stands right in front and the Nakamori slope is a minute's walk away. The 60 non-smoking rooms fill three buildings. Saison Court holds the mountain-view rooms and maisonettes for up to six, the standard rooms sit in The Guest, and The Main has superior twins with a tatami corner.
Every bath runs straight from the source, and the hotel says its water is the most acidic of Zao's springs. You can soak in the rock indoor bath or the cypress open-air Hagakure no Yu at any hour outside the 10:00 to 12:00 clean, then rinse off in the heated hinoki tub. A dry sauna opens from 16:00 to 22:00, and two private baths take bookings from 7:00 to 22:00.
Dinner is a regional kaiseki with Yamagata beef cooked on a ceramic grill, or a Yamagata beef hot pot with a kamado buffet of about twenty dishes that includes imoni. Breakfast switches between a buffet and a Japanese set by the day. The hotel has a ski drying room and rents skis and boards, and staff collect guests from the bus terminal for free.
