Mt. Nokogiri suits anyone who wants a short climb by ropeway to a cliff-edge view over Tokyo Bay, and its trade-off is a temple circuit of steep stone steps that takes about an hour and a half.

Landslides close part of Route 127 between Kanaya and Hota on the Boso coast
Typhoon No. 25 brought landslides that closed part of National Route 127 between Hama-Kanaya and Hota in autumn 2026, along with prefectural road 182. Nihon-ji asks drivers heading to Nokogiriyama to come in from the Kyonan-Hota interchange. The Pacific Cycling Road follows Route 127 here, so riders take the detour until the road reopens.

Nihon-ji's grounds are paved and full of steps. Wheelchair users can reach the Great Buddha plaza from the car park at the Daibutsu entrance with help.
Nokogiriyama rises behind Hama-Kanaya on the Tokyo Bay side of Boso. Quarrymen cut Boshu building stone here, and the old cutting faces still show about 30 minutes' walk from the top station. The ropeway climbs in about four minutes, with cars every 15 minutes or as often as every five when it gets busy. A stone-cutting display in the summit restaurant shows the tools.
Nihon-ji spreads over the southern slope. The temple says the monk Gyoki founded it in 725 by imperial order, and the walk takes in the Great Buddha of Yakushi Nyorai, the 1,500 arhat statues, the Hyakushaku Kannon and the ledge called Jigoku Nozoki, whose name means a peek into hell. Allow about 90 minutes for the circuit, and wear shoes with grip for the stairs.
The Tokyo Wan Ferry from Kurihama lands at Kanaya, below the mountain, and takes bikes. In autumn 2026 the coast road south from Kanaya to Hota was closed by landslides, so check the road before you plan a ride round the cape from here.
Worth knowing
- Pay the Nihon-ji entry fee separately from the ropeway.
- Keep your temple ticket if you leave and come back in by another entrance.
