- Train
- Joetsu Shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa, then the free shuttle bus to Maiko Kogen Hotel (about 20 minutes) or the ski centre (about 30 minutes).
The nearest station is Echigo-Yuzawa, 30 minutes from the first lift. Free shuttle bus to the ski centre; about 20 minutes to the hotel.
Maiko sits right beside the Shiozawa-Ishiuchi interchange, and the operator says you reach the slopes one minute after leaving the expressway. Its 26 courses spread across three areas called Maiko, Nagamine and Okusoechi, served by a gondola and nine chairs. The operator quotes a longest run of about 6,000 metres. The day centre at the base holds rental, lockers and tickets, and the gondola leaves from there.
The gondola climbs to the Okusoechi area at the top, where the summit café ITADAKI stands next to the Sky Dome restaurant. Okusoechi has ungroomed snow after storms and the Haglöfs tree-run area. Nagamine holds the long cruise back down, plus an ungroomed expert course that opens only when conditions allow. The resort publishes an off-piste map that marks the closed areas.
Maiko Kogen Hotel sits on the slopes, and its guests can ride the night sessions and the early starts. Night riding runs on weekends from January to mid-March. Free shuttles leave Echigo-Yuzawa for the hotel, about 20 minutes, and the ski centre, about 30. Guided backcountry tours climb Iiji-san behind the resort.
Worth knowing
- Read the off-piste map before you ride the trees; it marks the closed areas.
- Buy the gondola fast-lane pass for ¥2,500 on busy weekends.
- 13 March 2027 is fireworks night, with extended lift hours and no shuttle bus.
