Road closure
The Hachimantai Jukai Line stays shut between Horaikyo and the Matsukawa gate
Iwate Prefecture closed the Jukai Line, prefectural road 318, from Horaikyo to the Matsukawa gate at 17:00 on 3 July 2024 after a landslide caved the road in, and it lists the closure as indefinite. The Hachimantai city tourism association expects the road to reopen after the snow melts in spring 2027. The open section from Horaikyo up to the Akita border closes every night from 17:00 on 16 October to 08:30 on 4 November 2026. Last winter Iwate shut the whole line from Kitanomata to Matsukawa Onsen from 4 November 2025 to 24 April 2026.

Road closure
The Hachimantai Aspite Line closes every night until 4 November
Iwate closes the Aspite Line, prefectural road 23, from Midorigaoka to Mikaeri Pass on the Akita border every night from 17:00 on 16 October to 08:30 on 4 November 2026, since ice and snow can settle on the road overnight. Akita closes its side the same way, and a sudden change in the weather can shut the road in daytime too. Last winter the Iwate side closed from 17:00 on 4 November 2025 to 10:00 on 15 April 2026. The prefecture has yet to post its winter dates for 2026/27.

Know before you bathe
The open-air pools are mixed, with 19:30 to 20:30 kept for women. Women may wrap a bath towel around themselves in the mixed pools, and an enclosed women-only pool lies across the mixed area. Take off jewellery, since the acid changes its colour, and don't fly drones near the inn.
Getting there
The inn sits at 1,400 metres just off the Hachimantai Aspite Line, which is open only from spring to autumn. From 1 August 2026 a reservation-only car service called Dragon-go runs up from the Akita side.
Toshichi Onsen Saiunso is a single inn at 1,400 metres on the Hachimantai plateau, and it calls itself the highest hot spring in Tohoku. The open-air pools look across to Mt. Iwate, and on some mornings the inn sits above a sea of cloud. The source comes out at 91°C and the inn runs it straight into the tubs. It also has no mains power or phone line, so a generator runs the lights.
The large outdoor pools are mixed. The inn keeps them for women from 19:30 to 20:30, sells large towels women can wrap in, and lets bathers wear their own yuami-gi. A walled women-only pool sits beyond the mixed area. Men's and women's indoor baths and a guests-only pair of outdoor pools fill out the rest.
In spring the Jukai Line runs between snow walls more than 8 metres high, and in autumn the leaves on the plateau turn from mid-September. Day bathers pay ¥700 between 8:00 and 17:00. The inn closes in late October and reopens with the roads in late April.
Worth knowing
- Stay away from the Oku-Toshichi pools above the inn. The inn bans bathing there because scalding water bursts through the ground.
- Check the Hachimantai road status before you drive. In October 2026 a landslide had closed part of the Jukai Line between the Matsukawa and Horaikyo gates.
