Know before you bathe
Try both baths across two visits, since men and women swap between the wooden and stone rooms each day.
Getting there
On the Yubatake, five minutes' walk from the bus terminal. Use the paid Yubatake car park.
Gozanoyu rebuilds an Edo and Meiji-era public bath on the Yubatake, and its story goes back to Minamoto no Yoritomo, who is said to have bathed here and sat on the stone that gave it its name. The wooden bath uses hinoki for the tub, hiba for the pillars and cedar overhead. The stone bath is granite. Each takes a different source, so two visits on two days let you feel the difference.
Upstairs, a 45-mat hall that bathers can use free looks straight over the Yubatake. The desk rents a yukata with a basket and geta for a three-hour walk around town, and the price includes your bath.
