Tanabe-ya
牛タン牛テール料理 たなべ家38°16′ N 140°52′ EYakiniku¥¥
Tanabe-ya suits gyutan fans who want the Tasuke recipe from a founder's grandson at a neighbourhood price, and the trade-off is a weekend menu cut down to a few dishes.
What to order
- The gyutan set with barley rice and tail soup
- Oxtail ramen
The owner of Tanabe-ya is a grandson of Sano Keishiro, the Aji Tasuke founder credited with the Sendai gyutan set. He has cooked for 45 years and run this room in the government district for 28, and he calls it a town set-meal shop now. The traditional set brings three slices of grilled tongue, and the menu adds oxtail ramen that took five years to develop along with house corned tongue. It sits three minutes on foot from Kita-Yobancho subway station, well away from the station queues.
Worth knowing
- Come on a weekday for the full menu; Saturday, Sunday and holidays run a short list with tongue katsu.
- Parties of eight or more can book the whole room.
