Sendai Asaichi
仙台朝市38°16′ N 140°53′ EMarket
Sendai Asaichi suits anyone with an hour to spare near the station who wants to see what Miyagi eats, and the trade-off is that it shuts on Sundays and holidays.
What to order
- Whatever the fishmongers have in season
The market grew out of the open-air stalls that went up beside Sendai Station after the 1945 air raids, and locals still call it Sendai's kitchen. Around seventy shops line the lanes five minutes on foot from the station with fish, vegetables and fruit, and a few counters cook for you on the spot. Shops keep their own hours inside the market's 8:00 to 18:00 window. The union posts its closed days each month, and the October and November 2026 lists add the Monday holidays to the usual Sundays.
Worth knowing
- On selected Saturdays the market runs a bargain day; the union announces each date on its site.
