What to order
- The gyutan set
- Extra oxtail soup
Sano Keishiro opened a beef-tongue grill in central Sendai in 1948, and Aji Tasuke credits him with inventing the Sendai gyutan set. He was born a farmer's son in Nishisato village, now Kahoku in Yamagata, and learned to love tongue from a French chef while training in Tokyo around 1935. His son Sano Kazuo runs the shop now. The set comes with three slices of salt-seasoned tongue grilled over charcoal, a bowl of oxtail soup and barley rice. The shop sits in Ichibancho, three minutes on foot from Kotodai-koen subway station.
Worth knowing
- Ask for a Miyagi sake with the set; the shop stocks local labels.
