Visiting with care · Open to visitors
The museum is open to all; the art field's outdoor works each keep their own season and hours.
- Many Echigo-Tsumari works stand in working villages and rice terraces, so park where the signs say and keep off the fields.
- The art field asks visitors not to take photos that bother residents, and caretakers may ask you not to photograph some works.
- Commercial use of photos of the works needs the organisers' agreement first.
Hiroshi Hara and Atelier Phi designed the building around a central pool and an open corridor, and it opened in 2003 as the Kinare exchange centre. It became a contemporary art museum in 2012 and took the name MonET after a refit in 2021. The permanent collection includes site-specific works by Leandro Erlich, Antony Gormley, Kohei Nawa and Ilya and Emilia Kabakov.
MonET is the hub for the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field, which spreads outdoor works over about 760 square kilometres of Tokamachi and Tsunan. In 2026 the year-round programme opened the outdoor works from 25 April to 8 November, and they shut on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The next full triennale runs from 17 July to 7 November 2027.
The Akashi no Yu hot spring shares the building, and a roadside station selling local food stands next door. Tokamachi Station is about ten minutes away on foot.
Worth knowing
- Pick up the common ticket at MonET's desk if you bought it online; the art field exchanges online tickets for paper ones here.
- Plan winter visits around the art field's winter programme, which for 2027 runs from 30 January to 7 March.
