Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale
大地の芸術祭 越後妻有アートトリエンナーレFestivalJul 17, 2027
The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale returns from 17 July to 7 November 2027 across Tokamachi and Tsunan, and it suits travellers with a car and two or three days to find art in old farmhouses and rice terraces; the works lie far apart, so plan on a car or one of the art field's bus tours.
The triennale puts contemporary art into the villages and fields of Echigo-Tsumari, which cover about 760 square kilometres of snow country, and the 2024 edition ran from 13 July to 10 November. Between triennales a year-round programme keeps many works open. In 2026 it ran from 25 April to 8 November and shut on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
MonET in Tokamachi and the Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel are the two big anchors, and both open outside the festival. The Echigo-Tsumari Snow Fireworks ticket already includes a voucher for the 2027 passport.
The art field asks visitors to respect the people who live among the works. Park in the marked spots and keep your camera away from people's homes.
Worth knowing
- Hire a car at Echigo-Yuzawa or Tokamachi; the works spread over two municipalities.
- Check each work's page for its opening days, which differ between summer and winter.
