Uchiko suits a slow day of old merchant streets and quiet valley lanes by bike, and its kabuki theatre is shut for repairs until about the end of 2028.

Who should base here
Stay at Ted's to ride the valley lanes on a rented bike and come back to a house built for cyclists.
Uchiko lies about 40 km southwest of Matsuyama, and the limited express takes about 25 minutes. The town grew as a stop on the Ozu road and on the Shikoku pilgrimage, and about 70% of its land is forest. Its preserved townscape is close to Ted's guesthouse, about 20 minutes on foot from the station.
The Uchiko-za theatre, an Important Cultural Property, closed on 2 September 2024 for about four years of seismic work, and the town expects the work to end around the end of 2028. Until then you can see the backstage dressing rooms from 9:00 to 16:30 at half the usual price. On the edge of town, Michi-no-Eki Karari sells the valley's produce from 8:00, and Ted's guesthouse rents gravel bikes and e-bikes for the hill lanes.
