Takehara suits slow travellers who want a preserved salt-merchant quarter, and it sits off the Shimanami route with a ferry hop to reach the islands.

Who should base here
Stay in Takehara for an evening in the old quarter and an early ferry from Tadanoumi to Omishima.
Takehara grew rich on salt in the second half of the Edo period, and its preserved district of old warehouses, merchant houses and temples made the list of Japan's 100 most scenic towns. The town is small, with a population just under 24,000 at the 2020 census.
Okunoshima, the island where the Imperial Japanese Army ran a poison gas plant, belongs to Takehara, and a visit there calls for the care you would bring to any memorial. Car ferries to Omishima leave from Tadanoumi port.
