Who should base here
Stay in Mishima the night before an Izu or Hakone ride so you can take the first Izuhakone train south or climb straight to Hakone Pass.
Mishima is the Tokaido Shinkansen stop where Izu, Hakone and Fuji meet. The Kodama takes 53 minutes from Tokyo for ¥4,600 in the 2026 timetable, and some Hikari stop here too. From the same station the Izuhakone Railway runs 32 minutes south to Shuzenji, so a rider can be on the Izu roads within an hour and a half of leaving Tokyo.
The city grew around Mishima Taisha, the shrine one name theory points to, and as a post town on the Tokaido. Clear streams fed by springs such as Kohama-ike, the pond in Rakujuen park, run through the city, and another theory says the land between them looked like three islands.
