Kure suits history readers and curry lovers who want Japan's naval story told at the Yamato Museum, and it is a working navy port with little old-town charm.

Who should base here
Stay in Kure for a day at the naval museums and a ship's curry for lunch, or as the start of a ride out along the Tobishima Kaido.
Things to do in Kure
Kure grew around the naval district founded in 1889 and the arsenal that followed, and the battleship Yamato was launched here in 1940. American bombing in June and July 1945 hit the city hard, and the British Commonwealth Occupation Force ran its headquarters here after the war. Today the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force keeps destroyers, submarines and its training squadron in the port.
The Yamato Museum holds a one-tenth-scale model of the battleship, and a JMSDF museum on the waterfront tells the navy's story. Kure's restaurants serve curries made to the recipes of individual ships and bases, each one approved by the ship's commander.
