Kagoshima faces Sakurajima across Kinko Bay. JMA keeps Sakurajima at volcanic alert level 3, which bars entry near the craters, so the best views come from the city waterfront and the ferry.
Eat Kagoshima kurobuta, the black pork finished on sweet potato, as shabu-shabu at Ichiniisan above the station, and cool off with shirokuma at Mujyaki in Tenmonkan, where the shaved ice was invented in 1947. Chiran, south of the city, holds the Chiran Peace Museum, about 45 minutes away by taxi.
