Things to do in Fukuoka and Hakata
Hakata is the ward round Hakata Station, where the Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen meet and the subway runs a few stops to Fukuoka Airport. JR Kyushu reopened the whole Kyushu Shinkansen on 18 September 2026 after repairs from the July earthquake in Kumamoto, so the line south runs again to Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo.
Eat Hakata ramen with thin noodles and a kaedama refill, and motsunabe, the offal hot pot the city's tourism office traces to postwar coal miners. Both have branches inside the station's Deitos building. At night about 100 yatai food stalls set up round the city, and most stay shut in bad weather.
Fukuoka Prefecture runs a cycling concierge that books rental bikes, guides and support cars and helps riders who fly in with a boxed bike. The Tour de Kyushu brings its Saga–Fukuoka stage to a city-centre finish on Meiji-dori each October.
