Azumino is the flat farming plain under the Northern Alps between Matsumoto and Omachi, known for spring-fed wasabi fields, and it suits cyclists and slow travellers. The trade-off is that sights sit far apart, so you need a bike or a car.

Who should base here

Things to do in Azumino
Azumino covers the northern half of the Matsumoto basin, where the Azusa and Takase rivers fan out under the Alps and spring water feeds the wasabi beds. Hotaka Shrine sits near Hotaka Station on the JR Oito Line, and the Azumi clan served it for centuries as descendants of its god Hotakami. The plain stays mostly flat, which makes it one of the easiest places in Nagano to ride for a day.
In winter Azumino works as a quieter base between Matsumoto's city life and Hakuba's resorts up the Oito Line. Come in spring and early summer when the paddies flood and the snowy peaks show in the water.
