This large onsen hotel stands on the Tazawako Kogen plateau below Mt. Akita-Komagatake. Its free bus leaves Tazawako Station at 15:30, 16:30 and 17:30 and takes about 30 minutes. In winter the 8:00 and 9:00 morning departures call at Tazawako ski area, and a bus collects skiers there at 16:10. Book by 17:00 the day before, because seats go in order of booking.
Big windows in the indoor bath Sennin no Yu look onto a garden of beech and broadleaf trees. The outdoor pool, Wakuju no Yu, has no washing area and opens at 16:00. The water is a sulphur spring rich in metasilicic acid, and the white flakes you see in the tub are yunohana mineral deposits.
Dinner is an all-you-can-eat buffet of Akita food, with kiritanpo hotpot in Hinai-jidori stock and firm Inaniwa udon. Every room is non-smoking. There's no coin laundry, which matters on a long ski trip, and the hotel asks drivers to fit winter tyres for the icy plateau roads.
