Beyond the ropes · Marked runs only
Marunuma forbids riding outside its marked area and closes courses and zones when it needs to. It leaves some courses ungroomed after snowfall, including the 755 m Silver course.
- Stay inside the marked riding area and out of closed courses and no-entry zones
- Anyone who breaks the rules or puts others at risk can be removed without a refund
- Trees carry no padding, because the resort leaves them unwrapped to protect the landscape

From Tokyo Station
- Drive
- About 50 minutes from the Numata IC on the Kan-etsu Expressway, or about 2 hours 30 minutes from the Nerima IC in Tokyo.
- Bus
- The seasonal Katashina Snow Express runs once a day from Busta Shinjuku to Michi-no-eki Oze Katashina, and Marunuma's booked shuttle carries its passengers on to the resort. In 2025/26 it ran from 20 December to 22 March for ¥4,500 one way, leaving Shinjuku at 7:35.
Name Marunuma as your destination when you book the Katashina Snow Express, because the resort shuttle carries only passengers booked for Marunuma.
The central car parks charge at weekends, and outside car parks 2 to 4 are free.
Marunuma Kogen spreads across the lower flanks of Mt. Nikko-Shirane in Katashina village, and the resort calls the mountain the highest peak north of Kanto. A ropeway lifts you to about 2,000 m and the longest run drops 4 km back to the base. The resort counts 22 courses on eight lifts. That altitude lets it open early in December and run into May.
Marunuma grooms most of its slopes and leaves some unpacked after a storm. The 755 m Silver course stays ungroomed with a long 32 degree mogul pitch. Riding outside the marked area is banned. Centre Station at the base has a day-use onsen and sauna, and Chalet Marunuma rents simple rooms on the slopes.
Come from the Numata interchange in winter, because navigation can send you round the Nikko side, where the road is closed from Yumoto Onsen and the detour adds about three hours. The 2026/27 prices were still unpublished on 11 October 2026; in 2025/26 a weekend day cost ¥6,300.
Worth knowing
- Set your navigation to come via Numata, because the Nikko approach is closed in winter.
- The Friendly Pass covers only the gentle lifts 1, 4 and Chuo, and suits a beginner's first day.
- Marunuma does not wrap its trees in padding, so give them room at speed.
