Know before you bathe
The baths are small and indoor only; keep voices low, and leave the water as you find it.
Getting there
About 15 minutes on foot over stone steps and paths from Murodo Terminal on the Alpine Route; in April and May the route crosses snow.
Mikurigaike Onsen opened in 1957 and calls itself the highest natural hot spring in Japan at 2,410 m. The source is in Jigokudani, the steaming valley below, and the water reaches the men's and women's indoor baths with nothing added to it. There is no open-air bath, though big windows look out over the mountains.
Jigokudani is part of Midagahara volcano, which JMA keeps at alert level 1 with active heat and volcanic gas around the vents. In the snow season Toyama's rules close Jigokudani to everyone, and at level 2 the assumed crater area closes as well. At level 3 entry is restricted within about 1.5 km to 2.5 km of Jigokudani, a radius that covers the Murodo plateau.
Worth knowing
- Check JMA's Midagahara page and the Murodo mountain-skiing site before a spring tour; both list current restrictions.
