The lodge opened on 13 August 1957 at 2,410 m on the Murodo plateau, and it still calls its bath the highest natural hot spring in Japan. The water comes from Jigokudani below the lodge, milky and acidic, and flows through the two indoor baths with no water or heat added. Guests may bathe at any hour except 8:00 to 9:00, when the baths are cleaned.
In April and May the path from Murodo Terminal runs over snow, and the lodge asks for sturdy footwear and warm layers because the weather can turn to blizzard. Spring tourers base here for the slopes around Murodo. File the entry form Toyama Prefecture requires in April, May and November, and carry a beacon. Bookings for each season open online, and a dormitory bed costs ¥13,000 a person with two meals all year.
