Getting there
Makino Kogen line bus from JR Makino Station, about 13 minutes, to the Makino Kogen Onsen Sarasa stop.
Sarasa sits at the top of the Metasequoia avenue on the Makino Kogen plateau, below Mt. Akasaka. It takes its name from the sarasa-dodan azalea that grows wild on the mountain and the Kurokoto pass. Each of the two single-sex bathhouses holds up to 50 people, with a main bath, a cooler shiki-yu tub, a lie-down jacuzzi, a sauna and an outdoor bath. The Dodan side is built from natural stone and the Furin side is tiled.
The water is a low-temperature alkaline simple spring with radon and fluoride, mild on the skin. A bath costs ¥850 for adults and ¥450 for children aged 3 to 11. The swimsuit Bade pool shuts from 1 October until late April. Shampoo and body soap are in the bathrooms, and a towel costs ¥250.
Opening runs from 10:00 to 21:00 with last entry at 20:30. Since April 2026 Sarasa closes every Wednesday, opening on a Wednesday holiday and closing the next day instead.
