Makino's 2.4 km avenue of about 500 metasequoias suits a slow ride or walk in any season, though it's a local road with traffic and the autumn colour weeks bring jams.

About 500 metasequoias line 2.4 km of the prefectural road through Makino Pick Land and up towards Makino Kogen. The Makino fruit growers' cooperative planted the first ones in 1981 for a children's farm project, and locals and the prefecture kept planting until the line reached its present length. In 1994 the Yomiuri newspaper picked it for its 'new 100 roadside tree landscapes of Japan'. The Nosaka mountains close off the view at the far end.
Each season looks different. New leaves turn the avenue pale green from late April into May, and it stays deep green from June through October. Autumn colour peaks from late November to early December, and the tourism association calls the shade brick or brown, since metasequoias don't turn maple red. Snow on the branches needs the right weather, though the bare trees in white fields are a winter scene of their own.
This is a road people live on. The tourism association asks visitors not to stop or park on it and to watch for cars while taking photos. Park at Makino Pick Land, which is free and adds temporary car parks in the colour season. There are no lights along the avenue at night beyond the street lamps.
