Takayama Jinya is the only Edo-period government office in Japan whose main buildings still stand, and it suits anyone in Takayama with half an hour and an interest in how the shogunate ran a province; the rooms have no heating in winter.

Most rooms are tatami, so wheelchair users change to an indoor wheelchair. Four steps lead to the entrance hall, and staff can lay a ramp with a little notice. There is one accessible toilet inside and another on the square in front.

- No pets inside except assistance dogs; staff show owners where to leave a pet

In 1692 the shogunate moved the Kanamori lords out of Hida to Kaminoyama in Dewa and took the province under its own rule. For the next 176 years, until 1868, 25 intendants governed Hida from this compound, and in 1777 the post rose from daikan to gundai. Of the 60 or so such offices in Japan at the end of the Edo period, only this one keeps its main buildings.
After 1868 the compound stayed at the centre of Hida's government, and Gifu Prefecture used it as a local office until 1969. Restoration to its Edo-period form then took about 26 years and finished in 1996, and the site has been a national historic site since 1929. In September 2026 Gifu Prefecture opened a crowdfunding appeal to buy the wooden shingles for re-roofing the rice storehouse.
Free guided tours run in Japanese and other languages, from a 5-minute overview to an hour-long walk, though not between 11:30 and 13:30. The Jinya-mae morning market sets up in the square outside from about 7:00 to noon, and the station is a 10-minute walk away.
Worth knowing
