Who should base here
Stay in an inn with its own bath and walk the town in the morning before the day buses arrive.
Yufuin sits in a small basin ringed by 1,000-metre mountains, with Mt. Yufu over the town. Autumn mornings often start in fog, and on the coldest winter days mist rises off Lake Kinrin. Horse-drawn carriages, chamber music and a film festival give the town a cultured streak.
Baths run from Otomaru Onsenkan, a ¥200 local bath, to hotel day baths facing Mt. Yufu. Up on the Tsukahara plateau toward Beppu, the tourism association rents TOKYOBIKE city bikes and e-bikes for gentle rides below the mountain.
