Getting there
Yufuin Station on the JR Kyudai line sits in the basin below Mt. Yufu, and the baths are spread across the valley around it.
Yufuin fills a small basin ringed by 1,000-metre peaks with Mt. Yufu over the top of it, and water and hot springs come up all over the valley floor. Mornings in autumn often start in fog, and on the coldest winter mornings mist rises off Lake Kinrin.
Bathing here means picking from many small owners. Otomaru Onsenkan is a no-frills local bath that opens at 6:00. Yama no Hotel Musouen has a large outdoor bath for women facing Mt. Yufu and family baths that need no booking. Yufuin Sansuikan lets men use the bath with a view of Mt. Yufu and women the upper-floor bath with ceramic tubs during day-bath hours.
