Tokushima suits travellers who come for the Awa Odori dance festival from 12 to 15 August, and the Iya Valley's vine bridges sit far to the west, closer to Oboke than to the city.
Who should base here
Stay by the station for an early train west toward Awa-Ikeda and Oboke.
Awa is the old name of the province, and for four nights each August, from the 12th to the 15th, dance groups called ren fill the streets with shamisen, taiko drums, flutes and bells. It grew out of the Bon dances of the Obon festival and is the largest dance festival in Japan.
For the Iya Valley, take the JR line west to Oboke and the Shikoku Kotsu bus to the Kazurabashi Yume Butai stop, five minutes on foot from the vine bridge. Hotel Sunshine Tokushima, five minutes by bike from the station, has big baths for after the ride.
