Shirahama suits riders on the Wakayama coast who want an onsen by the sea and a white-sand beach at the end of the day, and its trade-off is a resort strip that fills in summer and on long weekends.

Who should base here
Stay a night for a soak at Sakinoyu and a swim or walk on Shirarahama beach before the ride south toward Kushimoto.
Shirahama is one of the three oldest hot springs in Japan alongside Dogo and Arima, and the town's Sakinoyu has bathed visitors on the rocks above the Pacific since the 7th century. The town lies on the Pacific Cycling Road as it rounds the Kii peninsula, and the limited express Kuroshio reaches it from Shin-Osaka in about 2 hours 40 minutes.
Giant Store Nanki-Shirahama rents road bikes and e-bikes from the ground floor of a hotel in the town centre. JR West's Kuroshio Cycle lets you load a bike on the limited express between Shirahama and Shingu. Toretore Ichiba, the fishing co-op's market, sits five minutes' drive from the station and opens from 8:30.
