Nasu suits families and onsen lovers who want highland air and a sulphur bath an hour from Tokyo by Shinkansen, and its sights spread so far up the volcano's flank that you need wheels to link them.

Who should base here
Stay up at Nasu Yumoto for the old baths, or lower down the highland road if you are driving between the farms, cafés and the outlet.
Nasu town climbs from farmland near Kurodahara up the slopes of Nasu-dake to the old spa at Nasu Yumoto. The Nasuno 253 left Tokyo at 8:26 on 16 October 2026 and reached Nasushiobara at 9:32, and Kanto Bus runs from the station's west exit up to the Nasu Ropeway. Get off at Nasu Yumoto for Shika no Yu, which the prefecture's tourism site calls the oldest bath in Tochigi at about 1,390 years.
Nasu-dake is an active volcano, so check the Japan Meteorological Agency's alert level before you head for the ropeway or the trails above Ominaru. The self-guided e-bike tours of Nasu and Shiobara run a 16 km beginner loop from the Nasu Kogen Visitor Center up the old Volcano Highway to Ominaru.
The Mt. Jeans Nasu ski area on the north side of town closed for good after the 2023/24 season. Its operator now runs Hunter Mountain Shiobara in Nasushiobara city as its ski area in the region.
