Who should base here
Stay a night to use the inn baths after dark and walk to Kabuyu and the river bath in a yukata.
Misasa Onsen lines the Mitoku River in the hills above Kurayoshi, and the onsen association counts its radon-rich water among the strongest radium springs in the world. The founding story tells of a samurai who spared an old white wolf more than 850 years ago and was shown the spring in a dream. That first source still feeds Kabuyu, the public bath that charges adults ¥400.
Misasa and Mt. Mitoku were named Japan Heritage together in 2015, on the old idea that pilgrims bathed here to clear the senses before climbing to the temple on the mountain. The tourist office at Hotto Plaza doubles as Cog Station Misasa Onsen and rents e-bikes and electric city bikes.
