Know before you bathe
Rinse with kake-yu before you get in, starting at the feet. Keep hot soaks to a few minutes, rest for half an hour afterwards and drink water. The river bath is mixed and sits in the open beside Misasa Bridge.
Getting there
Misasa sits in the hills above Kurayoshi; the tourist office at Hotto Plaza rents e-bikes as Cog Station Misasa Onsen.
Misasa Onsen lines the Mitoku River, and the town's history starts at Kabuyu, the public bath fed by the source said to have been revealed to a samurai who spared a white wolf more than 850 years ago. That spring still rises from the roots of an old camphor tree. Kabuyu opens from 9:00, from 10:00 on Mondays, until 20:45.
Kawara-buro sits on the riverbank by the 1934 granite Misasa Bridge and serves as the town's symbol. It is a mixed outdoor bath open day and night, except on odd-numbered mornings when it is cleaned. A free foot bath, Kawara no Yu, sits beside it.
