Kochi suits food-led travellers who want katsuo tataki at a shared table and a street market under the castle, and that market runs on Sundays only.

Who should base here
Stay central so Hirome Market is a walk from your bed and you can be on Otesuji when the Sunday stalls open.
Eat in Kochi
Kochi Castle keeps its Edo-period keep and every building of the main enclosure, and the prefecture's park office says no other castle in Japan can claim that. A fire in 1727 took almost everything but the Otemon gate, and the buildings stood again as before by 1753.
Every Sunday since 1690, about 300 stalls have lined roughly 1 km of the Otesuji avenue below the castle from about 6:00 until about 14:00. Hirome Market is a short walk away and opens every day until 23:00, and its Myojinmaru stall sears bonito over burning straw. East of the city on the Yasu coast, the Konan Cycling Terminal rents bikes for a seaside path of about 15 km.
