Things to do in Kitakami
Kitakami is a Tohoku Shinkansen stop south of Morioka, and the reason skiers get off here is Geto Kogen, a ski area in the mountains west of the city that calls itself the king of snow. For 2026/27 its shuttle from Kitakami Station charges a fare for the first time: ¥1,000 from the station area and ¥500 from the stops higher up, cash only. High school students and younger ride free, and for overseas visitors the free fare covers anyone 17 or under.
Drivers reach Geto in about 25 minutes from the Kitakami-nishi interchange. The prefectural and city roads are cleared early every morning, and the road to the ski area closes from 23:00 to 5:00 while the ploughs work. Geto runs tree-run areas, guided backcountry tours and snowmobile trips, and its base has a hot-spring bath.
Worth knowing
- Buy a ¥15,000 shuttle season pass at Geto's ticket counter if you plan to ride every day for a long stay.
- Carry cash for the shuttle. It takes no cards or mobile payments.
