Hiroshima suits every visitor to the region as a base with the Peace Memorial, okonomiyaki and Shinkansen links, and the trade-off is a train ride east to reach the Shimanami start.

Who should base here
Stay in Hiroshima to visit the Peace Memorial with time to spare, and use it as the western gateway to Kure, Takehara and the islands.
Mori Terumoto founded Hiroshima as a castle town on the Ota River delta in 1589. On 6 August 1945 at 8:15 a.m., the United States dropped the atomic bomb Little Boy on the city, and between 90,000 and 166,000 people had died from it by the end of that year. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial, the ruined dome by the river, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Peace Memorial Park and Museum ask for quiet and time.
The rebuilt city is the largest in western Honshu and the home of Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, layered on the griddle with cabbage and noodles. The style grew out of the stalls that sprang up around 1950 as the city recovered, which later became Okonomimura. Hiroshima Station is a stop on the Sanyo Shinkansen.
