Things to do in Gotemba
Gotemba sits on the east side of Fuji, between Hakone and the Fuji Five Lakes, on the Tomei and Shin-Tomei expressways. Japanese Wikipedia traces the name to a temporary palace, a goten, built here in 1616 when Tokugawa Ieyasu's body was moved from Kunozan to Nikko. The city writes its name Gotemba in the old Hepburn style, though Gotenba also appears.
For riders it is a junction. Roads run north over Kagosaka Pass to Lake Yamanaka, east into Hakone and south to Mishima, so Gotemba works as a cheaper bed between the bigger names.
