Arai suits riders heading for Arai Mountain Resort and road cyclists who want a working town with a brewery and a big roadside station, and its trade-off is a plain town centre with little to hold you after dark.

Arai is the centre of Myoko city, down on the plain at Arai Station, and the Arai ski area rises in the hills to the west. The Lotte Arai Resort hotel stands at the base of those slopes, a drive out of town.
In town, Kiminoi has brewed sake since the 1830s, and Tachibana has served the local pork soup since 1972. Michi-no-Eki Arai on Route 18 gathers a fish market, a farm stand and a string of restaurants beside the expressway, which makes it the obvious stop on a ride or a drive.
