Toma Ryokan suits bath obsessives who judge an inn by its water, and its trade-off is a small family inn with no car park for winter day visitors.

The owner of Toma Ryokan runs a school of onsen sommeliers, and the inn treats its water accordingly. Every day the baths are drained and scrubbed, and the free-flowing source is kept at a comfortable temperature through the year without adding cold water.
In winter Toma calls itself a ski inn, three minutes on foot from the Akakura Onsen ski area. It holds bags before the 15:00 check-in and after the 10:00 check-out so you can ride on your last day.
Dinner courses are priced by what they include, and the inn sells discounted lift tickets to its guests. Non-guests can bathe on ski-season weekdays only, from 18:00 to 19:00, for ¥500 cash, and only if they arrive on foot.
