Taenoyu
¥18,150 a night
Goto Teiji and his wife Umeno opened Taenoyu in 1952 after they found hot water in the forest, at a time when the walk in from town took half a day. Two springs of the inn's own feed eight tubs without recirculation. Gin no Yu is clear and soft. Kin no Yu is a cloudy, acidic sulphate spring with a trace of iron and sulphur. A few tubs close for the winter.
The indoor baths and the separate outdoor baths swap between men and women at set times. Myoken no Yu and Gin no Yu are the two mixed outdoor baths. They keep women-only hours, and bathers may wrap a bath towel there. Guests use the private bath Yawaragi no Yu free during their stay.
Rooms come in five types, and every one has a toilet; the Momiji-kan rooms on the river side were renovated in 2020 and 2021. Kiritanpo hotpot here is a clear soy broth made with Hinai-jidori stock, and the mushroom soup uses wild mushrooms salted down each autumn. The whole inn is non-smoking.
The Ugo Kotsu bus to Nyuto Onsen takes about 50 minutes from Tazawako Station to the Taenoyu Onsen-mae stop, a minute from the door, and a taxi takes about 30 minutes. Overnight guests can buy the Yumeguri-cho pass for ¥2,500, which covers a day bath at each of the seven Nyuto inns for a year, and the Yumeguri-go shuttle links them.
