Kurofune Hotel takes its name from Perry's black ships, which anchored off Shimoda in 1854, and every window looks across Shimoda Bay. Rooms range from Showa-style tatami rooms in the west wing to detached maisonettes with a rock open-air bath and a hinoki tub.
The two big baths, Unabara-no-yu on the seventh floor and the smaller Nagisa-no-yu, each have an indoor pool with a dry sauna and an outdoor bath that seems to run into the bay. The water is a mild alkaline simple spring. Getting there takes about 30 steps, so mind tired legs. Day visitors pay ¥1,600 from 15:00 to 21:00, except over Golden Week, summer and New Year.
Izukyu-Shimoda Station is 13 minutes away on foot. The front desk rents bikes in two-hour blocks for a loop of the harbour, and the car park holds 38 cars.
