Kogakuro
¥20,000 a night
Kogakuro is a traditional ryokan in the upper part of Akakura Onsen with an elevator, a sauna and an open-air bath, all on free-flowing source water. The inn retells the story that the priest Shinran found the Akakura spring, and it notes that Akakura has drawn well-off visitors since the Meiji era.
The last check-in is 18:00 and dinner starts by 18:30. If you are later than 18:00 without calling, the inn treats the booking as cancelled, so ring ahead from the train.
From 20 December the inn charges ¥1,000 a night per car for its own car park, which you cannot reserve, or sends you to the village guest car park about 700 metres away. Day bathing costs ¥800 an adult from 15:00 to 19:00 outside the 20 December to 10 March peak.
