The visitor centre has a communication board for visitors who are deaf or hard of hearing; the dunes are loose sand.
The dunes lie on the coast north of Tottori, inside the San'in Kaigan National Park and Geopark. Entry is free, and there is no gate or fence. The visitor centre opens 9:00 to 17:00 with guides on hand, a seven-minute dome film that starts every 20 minutes and exhibits on how the sand arrived and what lives in it.
Buses run from Tottori Station on the Iwami-Iwai and Sakyu lines. Graffiti on the sand and swimming off the dunes are both banned by ordinance, and the visitor centre publishes its own rules for photography.
