On light-up evenings a reserved shuttle carries visitors who cannot walk, including pregnant visitors and people with limited mobility; ask the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association ahead.
The village runs the observatory on the old Ogimachi castle site above the World Heritage settlement. You can ride the observatory shuttle bus or walk the trail behind the Wada house in 15 to 20 minutes.
The tourist association suggests two to three hours for the village itself, and the observatory fits at the end of that loop. Cars may not drive up on light-up days, and on those evenings tripods are banned on the cramped deck, which takes visitors in three timed groups.
The deck looks over a living village where families still re-thatch their roofs together, and residents refuse drone filming over the settlement, so leave the drone at home.
Worth knowing
- Walk up from behind the Wada house; the trail takes 15 to 20 minutes.
- The toilet at the Ogimachi Tenshukaku Observatory shop closes when the shop does.
- Fit snow tyres for any winter visit; the village and the national road office require them from December to March.
