The store fills a corner of the Lake Biwa Marriott Hotel's ground floor in Moriyama, and the lakeside cycling path starts right outside the door. Nagisa Park in front of the store holds the 'cyclists' sacred place' monument that Biwaichi riders stop to photograph. Rentals start at ¥3,960 a day for a cross bike and ¥4,950 for an aluminium road bike, with insurance and a helmet included. Staff fit each bike to the rider before you leave.
Giant runs one-way rentals only between Imabari and Onomichi, so plan a loop from here. The store's own answer for the 150 km north lake loop is 10 to 12 hours of riding. The store does take mid-route returns for the Maibara Station shop, which helps if you start there and want to finish on the south shore.
The Sunday morning ride leaves at 7:00 and costs nothing, but you have to sign up by 19:00 the day before through the store's LINE or Instagram. The late-August ride ran a flat 35 km out to the Omi-Ohashi bridge and back by 8:45.
Worth knowing
- From JR Katata Station on the Kosei line, a local bus takes about 15 minutes to the hotel.
- Renting? Ask for the discount at the Marriott's hot-spring bath when you get back.
