Know before you bathe
Wash at the taps before you get in, tie up long hair and keep towels out of the water. The baths ban swimsuits and towels worn in the water, phones in the changing rooms and photos anywhere inside. Bring no food or drink in, and rinse your stool and basin before you leave.
Getting there
Two minutes on foot from the Honkan, beside Tsubaki-no-Yu in the Dogo shopping arcade.
Matsuyama built Asuka-no-Yu as Dogo's new bathhouse in the style of the Asuka period, to go with the stories of Prince Shotoku and Empress Saimei visiting the spring. It has the outdoor bath the Honkan lacks. Big Tobe-ware tile murals of old Dogo poems wrap the indoor baths, and a camellia garden fills the courtyard.
Upstairs, the special family bath copies the Honkan's imperial Yushinden and comes with an old-style bathing robe called a yuchō. You can book it 90 days ahead online or by phone. The large hall is about 60 tatami mats, close to the size of the Kami-no-Yu hall in the Honkan, and five private rooms each take a Dogo legend as their theme.
Worth knowing
- The three-bath ticket at ¥1,440 covers Asuka-no-Yu's ground-floor bath, so buy it here if you plan to try all three.
- If you book the special bath, go straight to the ticket booth staff 10 minutes early and skip the ticket queue.
