Every ship and base in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force keeps its own curry recipe, and many units eat curry for lunch on Fridays. In Kure, restaurants learn a particular ship's recipe from its cooks, and the ship's commander tastes the result and certifies it as the ship's own. The Kure Kaiji Curry traders' group lists the shops and runs a sticker rally, with prizes collected at the tourist office in the Kure station building.
The traders' group repeats the story that Friday curry keeps sailors from losing track of the days at sea. Former JMSDF chief of staff Kawano Katsutoshi has said Saturday lunch was curry because it was quick to make before the afternoon off, and it moved to Friday when Saturdays became days off. The navy's oldest printed curry recipe dates from 1908.
