Hakkoda's spring season suits experienced ski tourers who want long descents from the ropeway to onsen and roads below; every tour route lies outside the patrolled area, so go with a guide or with full avalanche gear and a plan.
From the Hakkoda Ropeway's summit station at 1,324 metres, six tour routes run down off the patrolled area to roads and onsen far below. Three open in early March in a typical year. The Miyasama route drops 424 metres to Sukayu. The Chuo route is 4 km long, and the Jogakura route branches off it down to Hotel Jogakura. Three longer routes open in early April, among them the Hokibadai route, which falls 850 metres toward Tashiro Kogen.
None of the routes ends at the ropeway, and the operator asks that nobody go alone. The Hakkoda Mountains Ski Safety Convention requires an entry form for all of them and bills rescues at ¥30,000 per rescuer per day. Sukayu Onsen's guides run shared tours through the season to 6 May 2027.
Hakkoda is an active volcano at JMA alert level 1. Bears live here too, and in summer 2026 Aomori's special bear warning closed the Hakkoda trails until 31 July. A one-way ropeway ride costs ¥1,550 and the snow-season pass ¥72,500 for 1 December to 5 May. Sukayu's guided tours cost ¥7,000 a day.
Worth knowing
- Join a Sukayu Guide tour for ¥7,000 a day if you don't know the routes.
- Fill in the mountain entry form before you leave the summit station, as the local rules require.
