Hida Folk Village is the umbrella name for Hida no Sato and the Minzokumura folk museum. Farmhouses from villages across Hida were moved here and rebuilt, four of them national Important Cultural Properties, and the staff keep up the seasonal rites that once filled them. Allow 40 minutes to an hour for a walk round, longer if you go inside each house.
Craftspeople demonstrate Ichii itto-bori yew carving and Hida shunkei lacquer, and visitors can join classes in kumihimo braiding or pottery. In winter the evening light-up runs from 9 January to 28 February 2027, from 17:30 to 20:30, and entry then costs ¥300.
The Sarubobo Bus loops the city's sights from the Nohi Bus Center, and the bus centre sells a set ticket that combines the return ride with entry. Drivers park in the village's own car park a minute from the gate.
Worth knowing
- Wear boots with grip in winter; the paths stay snowy and the lent wheelchairs stop from December.
