JR West's Wakayama cycle trains let you ride the coast and take a whole bike back on the train, and they suit anyone doing the Pacific Cycling Road's Wakayama stage between Shingu and Wakayama. The trade-off is that each stretch of line has its own booking rule, so check which train you need before you set off.

South of Gobo the arrangement is simple. Any local train between Gobo and Shingu takes a whole bike on the ordinary fare, apart from a few JR West lists, and nobody asks for a booking. These are one-man trains, so at an unstaffed halt you get on and off by the driver's door at the front of car 1.
North of Gobo, Cycle Train Plus covers the busier run into Wakayama. You book a named train online for free, wait at the last door of the last car and strap the bike to a handrail with your own bands. The same scheme runs inland on the Wakayama Line to Gojo, on Sundays and holidays only.
Kuroshio Cycle is the fast option. Every Kuroshio limited express between Shirahama and Shingu sets aside car 6 for cyclists, and one booked seat gets you a row of four with room to stand the bike in a cover lent free at the gate. It stops only at Shirahama, Kushimoto, Kii-Katsuura and Shingu, and JR West drops it over Golden Week, Obon, the September holidays, early October and New Year.
Worth knowing
- Pack bands or straps before you leave; JR West's cars have no bike racks and staff can refuse a bike you cannot tie down.
- Check JR West's train list on the morning you travel, since it can change without notice.
- Book Kuroshio Cycle around the excluded dates in 2026: 1 to 7 October and 29 December to 4 January among them.
