Yakushima suits hikers and riders who want ancient cedar forest and a quiet coast road round a mountain island, and storms can shut its mountain roads for weeks.
Road closure
A landslide keeps the road to Shiratani Unsuikyo on Yakushima closed
The prefectural road to Shiratani Unsuikyo has been shut by a landslide since 4 September 2026, and the ravine is closed until the road reopens. From 1 March to 30 November bicycles are also barred from the road to the Arakawa trailhead for Jomon Sugi, where a shuttle bus runs.

Who should base here
Stay in Miyanoura or Anbo to catch the early trail bus and to ride the island's coast road on the days the mountains are closed.
Things to do in Yakushima
Yakushima joined the World Natural Heritage list in 1993 for its cedar forests, and Jomon Sugi, its largest cedar, is a full day's walk from the Arakawa trailhead. From March to November private cars and bicycles may not use the road to the trailhead, and a trail bus runs from the Yakusugi Museum.
Typhoon No. 24 closed the mountain roads in early September 2026. Jomon Sugi, Mt. Miyanoura and Yakusugi Land have reopened, while Shiratani Unsuikyo stays closed until a landslide on its access road is cleared. Check the mountain conservation council's status page before you plan a forest day.
