Kunisaki suits riders who want quiet coast roads and mountain temples on a round peninsula, and services are thin once you leave the coast.

Stay on the peninsula to ride the coast and reach the inland temples early, before the autumn crowds at Futago-ji.
Things to do in Kunisaki
The Kunisaki peninsula is a round dome with Mt. Futago at its centre and valleys falling to the sea on every side. Its Tendai temples, known together as Rokugo Manzan, trace their founding to 718 and once counted 185 temples and some 800 halls and caves. Futago-ji, halfway up the mountain, ran the whole group from the Edo period.
On the east coast the city's cycling terminal at the Michi-no-Eki Kunisaki rents bikes for ¥500 a day, and its free map shows a ride of about 13 km each way, mostly on a dedicated path along the Iyo Sea. Oita's cycling site maps longer loops right round the peninsula.
